Where to Live in Phuket

Bang Tao, Rawai, Kata or Phuket Town? A local’s guide to choosing yours.

Everyone falls in love with Phuket from a sunbed.
Living here is a different decision.

Phuket isn’t one place. It’s a dozen villages with completely different personalities, and the wrong one can turn paradise into an hour of traffic every morning. Pick right, and you’ll never want to leave.

We live here. Our home base is Bang Tao. Here’s the local’s guide to choosing yours.

First, the golden rule

Pick your anchor. Then your area.

Choose your daily anchor first: school, office, gym or the beach you’ll swim at every morning. Then pick the area around it. There’s almost no public transport on the island, so you’ll be driving either way. Make the drive short.

Seven Ways to Live in Phuket

Price tiers run from $ (best value) to $$$$ (the island’s highest).

01

Mai Khao

Phuket’s most private address, before everyone finds out
$$–$$$Social detoxGolfCyclingFrequent flyers
Instagram postMai Khao Beach

The island’s longest, emptiest beach, inside Sirinat National Park, where sea turtles still come ashore to nest. This is where Phuket’s top-end villas and resorts hide. Anantara Mai Khao sits here between the Andaman Sea and a mangrove forest (MICHELIN Guide), and the airport is about 15 minutes away.

Here’s the twist: it’s still not expensive. Mai Khao is five-star privacy without Bang Tao prices, at least for now.

Social detox: no beach clubs, no traffic, no scene. Golf: Blue Canyon Country Club is on your doorstep. Cycling: quiet roads make it the island’s best area for riders. Healthcare: Bumrungrad International Hospital is building its first Phuket campus here, less than 10 minutes from the airport, with the first phase scheduled to open in mid-2027 (Bumrungrad).

If Bang Tao is where Phuket goes to be seen, Mai Khao is where it goes to disappear.

Love it forSpace, silence, protected nature, quiet roads and a short ride to your flight.
Think twice ifYou want restaurants, nightlife or international schools nearby. Everything else is a drive, and planes land right over the beach.

Bang Tao & Laguna

Phuket’s priciest address
$$$$FamiliesUpscale beach livingInternational schools
Instagram postBang Tao / Laguna

Resort living that actually works day to day. Laguna’s gated communities and golf courses, a long west-coast beach, and everything you need between Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket: specialty coffee, supermarkets, gyms and some of the island’s best restaurants.

Start your mornings with our 9 Best Brunch Spots in Bang Tao.

We’re biased, but this is where Phuket feels most effortless.

Love it forFamily infrastructure, new developments, polished dining and shopping.
Think twice ifYou want authentic Thai life or the lowest rent. Condo prices here are the highest on the island, on par with prime Bangkok, and high season brings crowds.

Kamala & Surin

Quiet luxury

Between Patong’s noise and Bang Tao’s polish sits a village that still feels like one. Clifftop villas, calm beaches and some of the best sunsets on the west coast.

Love it forPeace, views, and being 15 minutes from both Patong and Laguna.
Think twice ifYou want nightlife on your doorstep or a budget rent.

Kata & Karon

Beach life, close to the action

Two of the island’s best beaches, a strong café scene and a relaxed resort feel: busier than the deep south, far calmer than Patong.

Love it forWalk-to-the-beach living, good value, and surf in monsoon season.
Think twice ifYou hate high-season traffic, or need big malls nearby.

Rawai & Nai Harn

The expat heartland

The settled heart of expat Phuket. Nai Harn’s beach and lake, yoga and Muay Thai on every corner, weekly markets and a community where people actually know their neighbors.

Love it forCommunity, calm and a real neighborhood feel.
Think twice ifYou need to be near the airport (it’s the far end of the island) or big shopping centers.
Where Southern tip of the islandPrice $$–$$$Google Maps ↗
06

Chalong

The smart middle
$–$$FamiliesFull-time residentsDaily training
Instagram postChalong / Soi Ta-iad

Not glamorous, and that’s the point. Central, practical and quietly preferred by people who’ve lived here for years: easy reach to the south, to Phuket Town and to the west coast, with vets, gyms and supermarkets on hand.

Inside Chalong

Soi Ta-iad: Phuket’s Fitness Street

A 1.5-kilometer street that runs on protein and sweat. Soi Ta-iad has more than 200 businesses built around training: Muay Thai camps like Tiger Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ gyms, strength studios, meal-prep kitchens and smoothie bars. Fighters, digital nomads and people on a transformation mission live side by side, and studio rentals are among the best value on the island.

Love it for: training twice a day without starting the car. Think twice if: you want quiet mornings. Peak season, November to March, is busy and booked up.
