[HERO PHOTO] Procession through Phuket Town, devotees in white

For nine days a year,
Phuket stops being a beach island.

Phuket Town turns white. The streets fill with smoke, drums and firecrackers loud enough to feel in your chest. Spirit mediums walk barefoot through it all in a trance, their cheeks pierced with blades. And every other food stall flies a yellow flag.

This is the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. Nothing on your hotel’s activity board prepares you for it. Here’s how to see it properly and respectfully, without losing your hearing or your shoes.

What You’re Actually Watching

Instagram postTAT Phuket · procession

Devotees spend the festival purifying body and mind in honor of the Nine Emperor Gods. That means the ten abstentions: no meat, seafood, eggs, dairy, or pungent plants like garlic and onion, no alcohol, and clean thoughts and behavior.

The headline moments are the morning street processions. The mah song, believed to be possessed by the gods, walk in trance with their faces pierced by swords, skewers and stranger objects, through a constant storm of firecrackers.

It is intense, it is sacred, and it is real.

2Bring earplugs.Seriously. A mask helps with the smoke too.
3Keep your distance from the mah song.Don’t touch them or their piercings.
4Ask before you photograph.Anyone in trance, and never use flash in their faces.
5Stay off the meat near the shrines. As a matter of respect.
6Think twice with small kids. The piercings are graphic. Pregnant visitors and families with young children may prefer to watch from a distance.

Eat Like a Devotee

Look for yellow flags with red Chinese characters. They mark jay food: strictly plant-based, with no meat, dairy, eggs, garlic or onion.

For nine days, Phuket Town becomes a plant-based food paradise, and you don’t have to believe anything to eat like you do.
